Assessing NKUs Foundation of Knowledge Course Level Assessment Workshop D. Kent Johnson, PhD Director – General Education and the QEP

Course Level Assessment Cycle The new assessment plan changed the assessment cycle so that we could examine learning across levels within specific Foundation SLOs assessment cycle The beginning point, therefore is the specific learning outcome(s) we are examining

Peggy Maki on Assessment A systematic means of ascertaining the fit between our expectations (what we intend) and students actual achievement of those expectations --Process is guided by and anchored in intellectual curiosity about the collective efficacy of our educational practices

Making Assessment Meaningful Assessment should help faculty explore, examine and create learning environments (or educational practices) that help students learn.

Making Assessment Meaningful Using Makis definition, we are looking at the extent to which our educational practices are bridging the gap between our expectations for students and their achievement.

Making Assessment Meaningful Assessment seeks to provide information to examine how or the extent to which educational practices are modifying the gap between expectations and achievement.

At the Program Level The educational practice becomes the courses students are matriculating through. How do the collective activities contribute to student learning as defined by the SLO?

Programmatic Assessment Model

At the Course Level The educational practice is the academic plan for the course. In other words, educational practice is the combination of lectures, assignments, in and out of class activities and even evaluation. How do the collective activities contribute to student learning as defined by the SLO?
