Wednesday, January 2nd BOCA Journal Prompt: What did you do over winter break? Today’s Agenda Go over classroom standards Discuss newspaper project due date Complete the newspaper project Library Day! If done with this project, you will be researching Jack London and completing a worksheet on him.

Thursday, January 3rd BOCA No journal On the vocabulary sheet, answer the 9 pre-reading questions by circling if you agree or disagree with the idea. Sit quietly when you are done!

Essential Question and Objective How do I write a text-based analysis essay that analyzes and responds to fiction or nonfiction texts with relevant, well-chosen evidence and with control of focus, organization, content, style, and mechanics? Define 8 TDA-based vocabulary terms and 9 Passage- based vocabulary terms for unit 3.

Text Dependent analysis Essay 4-5 Paragraphs Answers the question and provides your own personal words AND words directly from the story (EVIDENCE) to prove your answer

Text Evidence Words from the text that back up the main point you are making in your writing or providing a clear example.

Supporting Claims You must use your own words in your essay to explain your point. You cannot just use the words from the story.

Well Organized, Structured Essay… INTRODUCTION: Answers the question, Explains what you will write about. Does not say, “I am going to write about…” BODY PARAGRAPHS: Support your answer with your own words, and examples from the text (text evidence). CONCLUSION: The text was IMPORTANT and your ANSWER WAS IMPORTANT, why? How can you tie it all together to MEAN SOMETHING?

Transition Words words and phrases that provide a connection between ideas, sentences, and paragraphs. Transitions help to make a piece of writing flow better. Ex. Another, In addition To, Finally, For Example …

Author’s Purpose The reason –WHY- an Author Writes Persuade or Convince Inform Entertain

Point of View The position from which the story is being told. Is the character telling the story? Or is a Narrator? Is it a person or an animal?
