Characterization Vocab Quiz 10/3

Direct Characterization Author describes the character using adjectives to tell the reader what the character is like. This is the author TELLING YOU about the character.

Indirect characterization Writer uses this when showing a character's personality through their actions, thoughts, feelings, words, etc. (Think of our STEAL acronym)

Protagonist Most important character. Often changes in an important way as a result of events. This character powers the action. (The main character… typically)

Antagonist Opposes the protagonist.

Dynamic Characters that change or grow Your protagonist is almost always a dynamic character

Static Characters that stays the same

Flat Character Flat Character A simple character that does not develop mentally or emotionally and often has strong defining characteristics (aka "simple character") Sometimes this is the same as a Static character… but sometimes it isn’t. Never the same as a dynamic character.

Round Character Round Character Complex characters that undergo development and can even surprise the reader (aka "complex character")
