Video Clip: Peas and Carrots http://movieclips.com/sjvh7-forrest-gump-movie-peas-and-carrots/ What are some obvious things? What can you guess about these characters that isn’t directly spoken or written in the scene? How does narration help you figure out the character traits?

Characters are classified as static or dynamic. Characterization Characters do not need to be human, but they should posses human traits. Characters are classified as static or dynamic. One who does not change much: static. Changes in an important way as a result of the story’s action: dynamic. The Process by which an author reveals a character’s personality is called Characterization.

Ways to Reveal a Character By telling us directly what a character is like By describing how the character looks/dresses By letting us view his appearance. By revealing the character’s inner thoughts By showing how other characters act or speak toward the character By showing a character’s actions towards others.

Revealing Methods Direct statements are signs of explicit characterization. The author is telling us up front in the text what kind of person he/she is. Indirect actions are signs of implicit characterization. These are things we know about the character from their own words/inferences made about them in the text.
