S8910U1000 Universal Electronic Ignition Modules Training Module

What you will learn Ignition Types S8910U1000 Features and Benefits Installation and Set Up Troubleshooting S8910U Advantage Product Cross Reference Information

Ignition Sources There are 3 different ways a burner can be ignited: 1) Standing Pilot Ignition 2) Intermittent Pilot Ignition Intermittent Pilot - S8610U 3) Direct Burner Ignition Hot Surface Ignition – S8910U Direct Spark Ignition – S87

S8910U1000

Universal Hot Surface Ignition Module What is the S8910U1000? Electronic control of direct hot surface Ignition systems used on gas fired furnaces, boilers, and other heating appliances Operating control of a direct ignition system using a 120 Vac hot surface igniter No spark generator Simple relay to power igniter Two wires to gas valve One Part Number: S8910U1000

S8910U Features – The Universal Choice Universal Compatibility Replaces over 100 Honeywell and competitor models. “Personality” Plug-Ins- match the ignition sequence of the model being replaced using the plug in selector tabs and cross reference chart for an instant equivalent of the old control. Application Flexibility Use with Single Rod or Dual Rod Systems Works with both Natural or LP gas Easy Installation Easy-to-use instructions plus the adaptation accessories required to adapt the existing hot surface ignition module Accessory kit includes: White-Rodgers adapter, Robertshaw ground lead, four ¼” female .032 quick-connects, one 3/16” female .032 quick connects, four selection tabs and seven wire labels.

The Universal Choice continued….. LED diagnostics Quickly troubleshoot and diagnose any problems with the system Ignition Trials Provides one or three ignition trials (4-second or 7-second trials) per call for heat Prepurge of 32-seconds or less Up to 90-seconds between purge cycle times Excellent industry acceptance The Honeywell brand is recognized as a top performer in the industry

Installation and Set Up

Installation of the S8910U Mount the module Do not mount with terminals facing up protect the module from exposure to water, moisture, corrosive chemicals and excessive dust and grease. Install selection tab (“personality plug-ins”) The number of trials for ignition and trial time is determined by the selection tabs. Four selection tabs are included with the S8910U. (A,B,C,D) Without a selection tab, the module operates at four-second trial time and one ignition. Selection tabs A and B — 4 seconds. Selection tabs C and D — 7 seconds. Wire the module Use diagrams in installation instructions for wiring

Selection Tab Installation See Tables 1 through 3 in installation instructions (Form 68-1061) for correct tab selection. Select and Install the correct tab, push firmly in place and discard the remaining tabs.

Troubleshooting

S8910U HOT SURFACE IGNITION LED Indicator Light LED GND 24V VALVE LED L2 HSI L1 SENSE ! WARNING Flashes Meaning Pulse Normal operation 1 Lockout 2 Flame signal 3 Internal Honeywell S8910U HOT SURFACE IGNITION

Troubleshooting of the S8910U LED shows system status for the current call for heat: Pulsing heartbeat is the normal operating mode during a call for heat (24V terminal is powered). The system can be in any of the normal operating modes including prepurge, warm-up, ignition trial, between trial purge, or normal run. One flash indicates the S8910U is in an ignition lockout mode. The most probable cause is the main burner failing to light or failure to detect the flame. Run the appliance through a call for heat and if the burner does not light, check the: gas supply input voltage hot surface igniter gas control Wiring If the main burner lights, but goes out at the end of ignition trial, check the: igniter/sensor flame rod burner ground connections wiring

Troubleshooting of the S8910U LED – Continued Two flashes indicates the flame rectification signal is weak. The most probable causes are: contaminated or mis-located igniter/sensor or flame rod poor flame sense lead-wire insulation or connections poor gas pressure If the flame rectification signal is strong when the appliance lights, but weak while heat is being delivered, check for overheating of the igniter/sensor, flame rod ceramic or flame sense leadwires. Three flashes indicate an internal error. The most probable cause is an S8910U logic failure. Start a new call for heat and if the three-flash signal returns, replace the S8910U.

The S8910U Advantage When promoting the S8910U keep these advantages in mind: The S8910U replaces over 100 Honeywell and competitor’s ignition modules; reduces inventory by stocking one versus many and saves time and money looking for the right part. Easy to use instructions and adaptation accessories saves the contractor valuable time and resources. Personality” Plug-Ins - match the ignition sequence of the model being replaced using the plug in selector tabs for a true Universal replacement. The S8910 is application flexible and can be used with single rod or dual rod systems, and natural or LP gas. The diagnostic LED makes troubleshooting simple, identifying ignition lockout, flame rectification signal and control failure, solving the problem quickly and satisfying the customer.

S8910U Universal Electronic Ignition Knowledge Test

Universal Electronic Ignition Knowledge Test Now that you completed this training module, take the short quiz to test your knowledge.

Test The S8910U1000 is a hot surface ignition module? T or F The S8910U is application flexible and works with single or dual rod systems? T or F The S8910U can be used with LP gas only? T or F The LED light displays the following: normal operation, lockout, weak flame signal and internal error? T or F If the internal error signal is still present after a new call for heat the S8910 can be repaired, it does not have to be replaced? T or F

Test The S8910U has “personality plug-ins” to match the ignition sequence of the control being replaced? T or F An ignition sequence must be chosen as there is no factory set sequence?
