1. Because I love you and I want you to do well on your SOL. This is a fragment. Why?

2. Because I love you, I want you to do well on your SOL. This is a complex sentence. The formula is DC + IC. Can we flip it? IC + DC?

3. YES!!! I want you to do well on your SOL because I love you. Notice that when the DC comes last, we usually do not need a comma.

5. Although my head hurts pretty badly right now, I can’t take any more Aleve because I would exceed the limit, and it might hurt my stomach. Compound/Complex sentence (DC + IC + DC + IC)

6. When I go to Walmart and the parking lot is really dirty. This is a fragment. Why?

7. The word and in the previous fragment is what makes it a fragment. There are several ways to fix it.

8. One way is to remove the and. It then becomes a complex sentence. DC + IC When I go to Walmart, the parking lot is really dirty.

9. Another way is to add an IC to the existing DC: When I go to Walmart and the parking lot is really dirty, I have to watch where I step.

10. Since you have paid attention and worked hard on your assignments. This is a fragment. Why?

11. Since you have paid attention and worked hard on your assignments, I will bake cookies, and I’ll do it from scratch. This is compound/complex. (DC + IC + IC) Can we flip it?

12. I will bake cookies, and I’ll do it from scratch, since you have paid attention and worked hard on your assignments. IC + IC + DC
