March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Updated Texts for Frame Addressing and Forwarding in a Mesh Network (Summary) Date: 2007-03-15 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.11. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.11. Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics

March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Abstract This presentation summarizes the changes made in new texts in a separate contribution [1] to resolve LB93 comments in the area of frame addressing and forwarding in a WLAN mesh network. Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics

Summary of Comments Resolved March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Summary of Comments Resolved Minor errors (e.g., wrong field names) 26, 27, 392, 395, 752, 753, 754, 755, 1137, 1894, 2229, 3187, 4227, 5657 General & unicasting 25, 165, 168, 393, 397, 751, 1424, 1828, 1829, 1830, 1907, 2199, 3511, 3563, 3586, 3584, 3588, 4308, 4378, 4825, 4828, 4859 Uncovered: 3587 Mesh E2E sequence numbering 391, 392, 480, 510, 2200, 4223, 4372, 4379, 4657 Uncovered: 2204, 4374 TTL field initialization at source MPs 394, 3582, 4375, 4658 Broadcasting/multicasting 487, 488, 489, 3857, 3858, 5325, 5326 Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics

Summary of Changes: General & Unicasting March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Summary of Changes: General & Unicasting New texts for 7.1.3.5a.5 New texts & document structure for 11A.3.4 Figures for valid address field usage & example addressing for Mesh Data and Mesh Management frames. Simplified & generalized descriptions covering all possible cases in frame addressing and forwarding in mesh. Use of new terminologies from new HWMP specifications [2] Proxy MP: MAPs & MPPs Proxied entity: STAs & non-802.11 terminals Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics

Summary of Changes: Mesh E2E Seq. No. & TTL March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Summary of Changes: Mesh E2E Seq. No. & TTL Mesh E2E Sequence Numbering Specify the handling of Mesh E2E Seq. No. at source MPs. Limit its usage for detecting duplicate frames only. Removed texts for out-of-order delivery detection and reordering procedures. TTL Field Initialization at Source MPs Initialized to MIB value. Added “dot11MeshTTL” to dot11MeshPointConfig TABLE in Annex D. Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics

Summary of Changes: Broadcasting & Multicasting March 2007 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/0389r0 March 2007 Summary of Changes: Broadcasting & Multicasting Fix the behavior at destination MPs when the Address 3 field of incoming frames is set to a broadcast address. Transmit the frames to all its peer MPs and, if any, proxied entities outside the boundary of the mesh after frame translation. The reachability of broadcast frames are controlled by TTL values only (not by the existence or the lack of optional address fields). Separate descriptions into those at source MPs and at intermediate/destination MPs (as in unicasting). Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics Kyeong Soo (Joseph) Kim, STMicroelectronics
