A Study of Light, Direction and Intensity WORKING WITH LIGHT A Study of Light, Direction and Intensity

Natural Light = Sun Bright = Direct Bright/Hazy = Shadows Bright/Cloudy = No Shadows Overcast = No Shadows Shade = Out of the direct rays of the sun. Daylight = Indoors/Not all natural light shots are taken outdoors. Ambient Light

Types of Lighting Front Lighting Most basic, not always the most appealing.

Side Lighting Preferred/from right or left.

Back Lighting Has disadvantages Back Lighting Has disadvantages. Can easily lose subject detail in shadow.

Outdoor Lighting Concerns Sun = Light Source Hard, directional light. This type of lighting usually causes “Blow Out” of details in bright areas.

Overcast Days Offers defused lighting capturing more detail.

Don’t Like the Lighting? Change your camera angle. Reposition your subject. Wait for a different time of day. Find another subject.

TIPS Walk around your subject when shooting outdoors. Choose the best time to shoot. Preferred time of day.

Adjusting Your Camera subject in direct sunlight. Let your film determine your basic shutter speed. Basic f/stop = f/16 = average subject in direct sunlight.
