WHAT IS ENERGY?

What is energy? Energy is defined as the ability to do work It is measured in joules (J)

Energy can be classified as potential or kinetic Potential energy: energy of position or also known as energy of rest

Potential energy can be classified as gravitational or elastic Gravitational potential energy: energy of position above Earth’s surface A B C

When work is done to stretch something, it is called elastic potential energy.

Kinetic and potential energy convert to one another B

What is kinetic energy? Energy of motion

What two variables affect kinetic energy? Mass: the more mass an object has, the more kinetic energy Velocity: the faster an object is moving the more kinetic energy it will have

FORMS OF ENERGY When you place your pencil into the sharpener what happens? What do you see, hear, feel and maybe even smell? What causes all of this to happen?

What are some types of energy? Mechanical: motion of an object Nuclear: stored in an atom and released during a nuclear reaction. Two types are fission and fusion Electrical: moving electric charges Thermal: the total movement of particles in an object (Temperature) Electromagnetic: travels in waves Chemical: stored in chemical bonds

The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can neither be created or destroyed……..just transferred

What type of energy are we running out of?

Nuclear energy- clean power for the world?...... “OR”

KABOOM!
