6Y 12-07-2016 Wednesday Chapter 2 Review Objective: Describe the encounter between Europe and the Americas during the 15th-17th centuries. Agenda: Prayer Do Now: page 65-66 #7-13 all Go over answers from page 65-66 Homework: unfinished classwork (page 65-66), study your notes. Open note/book Test on Friday.

8A. Columbus’ first voyage was important because it expanded the European view of the world and began a tide of European exploration and settlement in the Americas. 8B. Conflict between Spain and Portugal emerged because they both wanted ownership of the new lands in the Americas. To resolve this conflict, the Pope created a Line of Demarcation in 1493 to divide the lands between Portugal and Spain. The Treaty of Tordesillas moved this line in 1494 to give more lands to Portugal. 8C. Opinions vary. Your answer could say different things as long as you support your opinion. Some facts you could use as evidence: The Colombian Exchange was good because it brought new products to both Europe and the Americas; The Columbian Exchange was bad because it brought great suffering to the Native Americans and led to slavery.

9A. The Spanish controlled Southern North America, Central America, and much of South America. 9B. The Spanish were able to defeat the Aztecs and Incas because of their superior weapons and armors, horses, the help of some Native Americans, and because of the harmful effects of European diseases on Native Americans , and the Natives thought that they were gods. 9C. The Spanish encomienda system was important to Spanish settlers because it gave them money by allowing them to tax Natives and it allowed them to use the Natives for free labor.

10A. The defeat of the Spanish Armada led to economic problems in Spain and a weakening of their power. Other European powers were now also able to challenge them. The Armada was also no longer able to keep other European countries from settling the Americas. More European nations began to sail and settle the Americas. 10B. French settlements in America were mostly for the fur trade and were in Northern parts of the Americas. They also treated Natives with respect. 10C. Conflicts might arise among different settlements in the Americas over land, resources, and power.
