Fractions The basics

---------------and --------------- There is a fine line between numerator ---------------and --------------- denominator

½ - Numerator Denominator the number of parts you have the number of parts which make up a whole eg ½ - one part of two

ONE SLICE = ONE PART FOUR SLICES IN TOTAL = FOUR PARTS ONE SLICE = ¼ ONE QUARTER

Fraction Square Time You each have a square. 1 – Fold it in half, draw the line, and label ½ 2 – Fold it in half again and label ¼ 3 – Fold it to label 1/8

Real life fractions Answer these in full sentences. How many Smarties in the tube? How many red Smarties in the tube? What fraction of your Smarties are red? Give each table/group a box of smarties.

To know fractions, you need to use your loaf Whip out a loaf of bread mysteriously from your backpack. Get them to count how many slices there are. What is the bread denominator (total number of slices). Take five slices and give it to a child – what Fraction of the loaf do they have? Play around with this idea, doling out the bread to all and sundry.

How many are brown – tell me as a fraction?

Check for Understanding WE ARE FRACTIONS Look around you. Look around you! What fraction in this class are female? What fraction in this class have long hair? What fraction in this class are wearing tennis shoes?
