Sentences, Fragments, & Run-On PowerPoint © Kara Lee 2014

What is a sentence? A sentence is a group of words that contains at least a subject and a predicate. A subject is a noun or a pronoun and tells who or what the sentence is about. A predicate is a verb and tells what the subject is doing. There are 4 types of sentences: Declarative – statement Imperative – command Exclamatory – exclamation Interrogative - question © Kara Lee

What is a sentence fragment? A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence. It does not express a complete thought. It is either missing the subject or the predicate. Sometimes sentence fragments look like sentences, so you have to be careful. For example: Were running errands. (missing subject) Correct: The adults were running errands. The new comedy movie. (missing predicate) Correct: The new comedy movie is playing at the theater. © Kara Lee

Compound Sentence A compound sentence is two sentences combined correctly using a comma and a conjunction. Example: We ate pizza, and we drank soda. “We ate pizza.” is a complete sentence. “We drank soda.” is also a complete sentence. Since they are combined using a comma and the word and, it is a compound sentence. © Kara Lee

Conjunctions A conjunction is a word used to connect sentences. A way to remember coordinating conjunctions which are used to fix run on sentences is by using the acronym FANBOYS. - F – for A – and N – nor B – but O – or Y – yet S – so If you add a coordinating conjunction to a run-on, you must use a comma if the 2 sentences are both complete sentences Example: We went to the store, and we bought groceries. You do not add a comma if one sentence is complete and the other is not. Example: We went to the store, and bought groceries. © Kara Lee

What is a run-on? A run-on is two or more sentences incorrectly combined. Example: We walked in the store and we bought some groceries. In order to fix a run-on, you can do 2 things: Make the sentence a compound sentence by adding a comma and a conjunction between the two sentences - We walked in the store, and we bought some groceries. Break the sentences into 2 sentences. - We walked in the store. We bought some groceries. © Kara Lee

Practice Let’s first practice by simply identifying the sentence, fragment, compound sentence, and run-on. Mom is cooking chicken for dinner and she is also cooking rice. The movie theater. The boys played in their fort. My brother lives in San Francisco, but he is coming to visit us next month! Were at the grocery store. Run-on Fragment Sentence Compound Sentence Fragment © Kara Lee

Now, let’s practice fixing the fragments and run-ons. We had fun at the fair it rained for a long time. Attended school last week. At the store the other day. My homework was easy it took me 20 minutes. We listened to music and we danced around the room. © Kara Lee
