Writing with Prepositions

Warm-Up What’s your favorite food and why?

Journal Free Write Create a brand new holiday with its own traditions, rituals, foods, and activities.

A Slight Alteration to Class Procedures Beginning of Class: Instead of bringing in a piece of paper, I’m going to have you bring in your 3-ring-binder instead so that you will have everything you’ll need for class readily available. End of Class: Instead of doing an exit ticket, I’m going to have you look around your desks and pick up any pieces of paper or other trash and throw them away so that we can keep the classroom tidy and ready for the next class period.

What do prepositional phrases add to a sentence? Today is the best day in the entire year because I finally won the lottery. Without the murder weapon, the prosecution had a weak case against her. I stopped before the halfway point in the hike up South Mountain.

Writing with Prepositional Phrases The beach is a welcoming vacation spot. It’s sunny and warm, and the water is cool. Whenever my family visits the beach, we spend hours swimming and playing. I help my little brother build sand castles while my parents surf. Going home is disappointing, but we return every year.

7th Period Only

Writing with Prepositional Phrases Peer review each others’ revised paragraphs based on the following criteria: Do the added prepositions enhance the paragraph (i.e. make it more interesting, more detailed, etc.)? Does the paragraph sound natural with the added prepositions? Provide feedback and suggest how the other person can improve their paragraph.
