Presentation transcript:

Let the adventures begin- A journey to another world ENGLISH As Writers, we will be using a range of different books which are set in imaginary lands as stimulus for our work: ‘The Journey’ and ‘Quest’ by Aaron Becker, ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward and ‘Just a Dream’ by Chris Van Allsberg. We will have the opportunity to write for a range of purposes including recounts of various journeys made by the characters in our stories and letters showing an understanding of what might have happened in these imaginary settings. We will also write narratives which show a developing understanding of how to write descriptively and build to a full story with a beginning, middle and ending. MATHEMATICS As Mathematicians, we will be developing our knowledge of number bonds to 20 as well as the + and - fact families which relate to them. We will be looking at the place value of numbers and use this knowledge and known number facts to solve problems. Addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers will be introduced and we will use concrete objects and various pictorial and written methods to solve number problems relating to this. We shall use our knowledge of Venn diagrams to sort living things during our science lessons, and our knowledge of compass points to draw our own maps in Geography. READING As Readers, we will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our topic. We will be developing our comprehension skills and using clues from the text to develop an understanding of what we are reading. Let the adventures begin- A journey to another world Year 2 Term 1 HISTORY As Historians, we shall be studying key figures in history and will look closely at the explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. We shall begin by researching and completing fact finding webs about their achievements before answering the question: ‘Who do you think was braver?’ During history week, we shall take an in depth look into the achievements of The Wright brothers and the flight of the first power driven aeroplane. P.E (Tuesday) As Athletes, we will be improving our team work skills and completing various orienteering tasks which require us to work together effectively Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit including trainers. Children will be completing lessons outside if the weather is fine. SCIENCE As Scientists, we will learn about a variety of habitats and the plants and animals that live there. We will look at the difference between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive, and apply this in a range of contexts. We will make observations of a local habitat and the creatures that live there, investigating conditions in local microhabitats and how they affect the minibeasts found within them. DT As Designers, we will think about and design our own dream school. We will then draw our designs digitally using the programme ‘Art Rage’. GEOGRAPHY As Geographers, we will learn about different contrasting countries. As a class we will be finding out about China and exploring the physical and human features of China compared to the UK. We shall also find out about school in China compared to our own. We will conclude our study by looking at the culture in China and by taking part in a Chinese tea and traditional food tasting afternoon. ART As Artists, we will be exploring colours and creating a colour wheel to display complimentary colours. We will explore different tools to create the same image and compare the outcomes, making choices as to which was our favourite tool to use. Towards the end of the term we shall study the work of Henri Matisse before creating our own Henri Matisse style art using paper cutting. COMPUTING As Computer technicians , we will use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. We shall also use data to create charts and graphs then answer questions from these.
