Person of interest in Churchville murders died

A 26-year-old man believed to have stabbed and shot to death a young Churchville, Pa. couple this week has been found dead in Philadelphia. At a news conference Wednesday evening in Northampton Township, authorities disclosed the death of suspect Daniel Mooney from an apparent drug overdose. They said they are confident that it was Mooney who killed Tyler Roy, 28, and his wife, Christina Roy, 27, in their home the night before he died. The bodies of the Roys had been found Tuesday morning on the upper floor of their split-level home at 26 Kitty Knight Drive in the Churchville section of Northampton. Both victims had been stabbed repeatedly and shot. Investigators believe they were murdered sometime overnight, and that the killer had stolen Tyler Roy's 2016 Ford Edge SUV. The vehicle was found, along with Mooney's cell phone, early Wednesday morning in Northeast Philadelphia. By that time, unknown to investigators, Mooney was already dead. Mooney had been taken to Temple University Hospital's Episcopal Campus in Philadelphia after suffering an apparent drug overdose around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Efforts to revive him failed. Mooney had long struggled with drug addiction, though it is not yet known whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the murders.

In Other News The release of three Americans detained in North Korea is "imminent." The North reportedly made the decision to free the Americans -- Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang Duk -- two months ago. President Trump hinted at movement in the case in a tweet last night. An official at the White House National Security Council said if the men are released, it would be viewed as a gesture of goodwill ahead of the planned summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Iowa lawmakers have passed what could be the nation's most restrictive abortion ban. The measure would stop doctors from performing an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. That generally happens about six weeks into a pregnancy -- and before many women even know they're expecting. Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, hasn't said if she'll sign it -- and is "100% pro-life," her spokeswoman said. If she does, it'd set off a legal fight, which many of the bill's supporters want. They hope it would go to the Supreme Court and help thwart Roe v. Wade (though the court overturned a similar state law a few years ago). The two black men whose arrest at a Philly Starbucks set off protests, boycotts and claims of racial bias have settled with the coffee chain and the city. Terms of the Starbucks agreement weren't released, but the men will get $1 each from the city and will help Philadelphia with a $200,000 effort to help high school entrepreneurs. The men were arrested last month after they sat down in the coffee shop and didn't order anything. They said they were waiting for an acquaintance. Starbucks' CEO apologized, and the men weren't charged with a crime.
