Today’s Learning Muscle Year 9 GCSE History Lesson 9 22 February, 201922 February, 2019 Keeping Control Learning Gain: All learners will explore William’s actions to prevent resistance . Today we will: Today’s Learning Muscle Identify changes to landownership laws Explain how the changes impacted people in England Consider the consequences of the changes to landownership laws.

What groups of people were living in England after 1066? Anglo-Saxons, Normans, & Vikings

Write down anything in GREEN. Saxons had been the ruling class in England for hundreds of years. Earls wanted to maintain their powerful status. Vikings lived in the North of England – in an area called the Danelaw. Full Viking invasion was a constant threat. Normans invaded England in 1066 Norman knights wanted land as a reward from William for their military service.

Group Task Using the information provided, make some conclusions about changes in land ownership in England in the years 1066-87. p. 60

Write down anything in GREEN. Landholding Under the Normans The King owned all the land, regardless of old agreements. People could be allowed “tenure” of the land – they would be the landholder for an agreed upon area. Anglo-Saxon landholders had to pay money to keep using the land they owned before 1066. If a landholder died without an heir, the land went back to the king. If an heir did inherit land, they had to pay a tax to the king. Anyone who acted against the king could be forced to forfeit their land.
