Theories of Personality Lap 4 What is Personality?

Erikson and Development Personality/ behavior is the result of completing the Psycho-social Stages of Development and Conflict Identity comes from conflicts with society Focus: socialization and successfully resolving an Identity Crisis at each stage of development Goal: Describe life time personality development Psychosocial stages of behavior and personality development includes whole life/ over time Not how or why/ vague on the causes of dev’t

Erikson and Development Eight Psycho-social Stages of Development Trust vs. mistrust Autonomy vs. shame and doubt Initiative vs. guilt Industry vs. inferiority Identity vs. role confusion Intimacy vs. isolation Generativity vs. stagnation Integrity vs. despair

Erikson and Development Ego develops by resolving social crisis in each stage of development (Identity Crisis) Predetermined order Builds on previous to develop skills and abilities

Erikson and Development Successful completion= “healthy person” with virtues to solve the next crisis and a strong sense of self Includes trust in others, identity in society, and helping the next generation prepare for the future Identity Crisis can be a force to a positive resolution Failure= “unhealthy” personality or sense of self

Erikson and Development Supports Freud’s ideas on structure of personality Ego develops by resolving social crisis in each stage of development Ego- establishes and maintains identity Not just a mediator between id and superego

Karen Horney Not a student of Freud Early Feminism Looked at gender differences and women’s creative capacity Gender differences are created by culture and society Anxiety is a stronger motive than Freud’s sexual energy Neurosis– maladaptive way to deal with relationships To cope with childhood anxiety Submission, aggression, detachment are examples Move toward, move against, and move away from people
