What are meta-skills? ‘…..timeless, higher order skills that create adaptive learners and promote success in whatever context the future brings.’ www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk/media/44684/skills-40_a-skills-model.pdf
Why do meta-skills matter? ‘These are the skills that enable individuals to perform highly today; in a changed world of work they will be required by all of us’. www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk/media/44684/skills-40_a-skills-model.pdf ‘To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning (SEL).’ http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_New_Vision_for_Education.pdf
SDS meta-skills framework www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk/media/44684/skills-40_a-skills-model.pdf
Project purposes To provide a baseline and evidence of distance travelled of an individual’s meta-skills development To test different methodologies of measuring and recording meta-skills in a work-based learning setting To build understanding of the impact of different learning experiences on the development of meta-skills To inform the future development of meta-skills in learning programmes
Approach to assessment Challenging to assess in a way that is valid, reliable and practicable No ‘right’ answer Triangulation of approaches Focus on raising learners’ awareness of and engagement with meta-skills Generating feedback to be used in a learning discussion
Assessment tools Qualtrics assessment tool For self assessment and tutor/supervisor use Scenario-based learning To set meta-skills in the context of a realistic, work-based problem
