3.1 Investigating to Understand an Argument

CONNECTION Email from principal about chocolate milk

TEACHING POINT Today I want to teach you that writers compose arguments by collecting evidence that considers ALL the sides of an argument.

TEACHING How You Will Do It What You Will Do Record notes on the readings at your table…but HOW??? What You Will Do Look at text with partner Collect evidence on your own  Flash-draft Wednesday

Chocolate Milk in Schools TEACHING Chocolate Milk in Schools For Against The title of the piece often tells us which side the author supports. Nutrition in Disguise: What the Midwest Dairy Council Has to Say About Chocolate Milk What do we expect from this piece, based on the title?

Nutrition in Disguise: What the Midwest Dairy Council Has to Say About Chocolate Milk What do we expect from this piece, based on the title?

Chocolate Milk in Schools TEACHING Chocolate Milk in Schools For Against Chocolate milk has nutrients I think that kids probably drink more milk when it is flavored… I thought chocolate milk would have more sugar, fat, or calories! Ms. Dobbins, a nutritionist, says, “Research shows that children who drink flavored milk meet more of their nutritional needs, do not consume more added sugar, fat, and calories, and are not heavier than non milk drinkers.” What details clearly support for (or against) chocolate milk here?

TEACHING Keep an open mind until you have collected ALL the research! Let’s try another piece…Chocolate Milk: More Harmful than Healthful Which side of the debate do we think this article supports? Read first two paragraphs, taking notes, then turn and talk.

TEACHING What about conflicting information??? The first article said that chocolate milk doesn’t have more sugar but this article says it has more than a can of soda! Notice this and save this for more investigation later.
