Double page article main image Edited photograph Double page article main image The photograph I chose of my artist was the one of him looking directly at the camera. I chose this one because it is very different to all of the other images I have used so far. Because it is an exclusive interview I felt it needed that edge to make it different. I then changed the background of the image to black which I believe makes the artist stand out very well. I then added the plectrum logo that I created during the making of my front cover. I changed the opacity of the image making it more translucent. I then placed it behind the artists head. Original photograph
Adding text I wanted to have callouts of quotes around the page as I have seen done in many other double pages articles of magazines. Using the cracked text effect I created the name of my artist in big bold letters. This really stands out and will grab the readers attention. Along the top of the name I added the quote from the article. I made this much smaller than the name but made the quote span the length of the page. I think that this looks very professional and good to look at. The writing is clear for the readers to see
Adding text I added my final callout to this image. I used the quote that I used on my front cover, this ties the article in with the rest of the magazine and also makes the audience ant to read on and find out more. I then saved this image as a JPEG and added it to InDesign which I where I put my double paged spread together.
Creating the article Using InDesign I split the page up into six equal columns. Three of these would be taken up with my main image and the other three would be reserved for the main article. I placed the image on the left hand side so as people read from left to right the picture would be the first thing they would see and would therefore draw them into the article. At the top of the page I placed a banner saying “Musik Magazine Exclusive” This tell the audience what they are about to read. It makes the article seem more unique which will make them want to read it. To create the banner I used the same colours and font that I used before, to make the article fit with the rest of my magazine.
Creating the article I created the heading for my article. Originally it was called “Plectrum-The reluctant Hero” but because I had such a large callout with the artists name already I felt there was no need to repeat it again. Instead I just used the ending of the title to head my article. I feel that this works a lot better than how I originally planned it. In my article I had a short introductory paragraph. I placed this under the heading and not in the columns where the rest of my text will go. I think this makes it stand out and also adds that feel of professionalism, this is a feature I have seen done in other magazines. I used the Showcard gothic font that I have been using throughout my magazine as headings for article's on the front page and contents page. This helps again to create a sense of identity within the magazine. Finally for this section I added the artists name in the signature font that I have also used throughout on the front cover. I think this makes the article appear more personal as though the artist has viewed it themselves. It also offers a wide diversity of font which makes the page more interesting to look at.
Creating the article The article in this box is the article I have written for my double paged spread. I used black text boxes as the background for the text as this links with the image on the opposite page and creates more of an identity within the article itself. For the interviewers speech I made the text grey like the colour of the background. This is easy to see against the black and also splits the text up into sections for ease of read, making it easy to pick out the information you want. The rest of the text I left in white in a smaller font to the question. This again is very easy to read and looks professional. Originally all of the text from the answers was white however, I then decided to add a sunken capital letter like I have seen done in many double paged spreads and was a feature I liked. I made the “F” much larger than all of the other text then manipulated the rest of the text to make the “F” appear sunken. This effect makes a very clear and definite start point to the article and creates clarity to the reader. I also changed this text into red to fit in with the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine.
Creating the article I repeated the same theme on the rest of the text columns to finish the article. I created another quote callout within the text, again as I have seen done in other magazines. This was a feature I liked and therefore decided to replicate for my own use. In picked out a quote I felt was meaningful and the audience would like “The guitar is not merely an instrument now, but an extension of my body” I made this text much larger to catch the eye of the reader and draw then towards the article. I then changed the font into red, the same colour as the sunken letter to make the quote stand out even more against the white of the other text around it.
Creating the images I wanted to use smaller images on my double paged spread and in the end it was these two that I decided on. I placed them at the bottom of the article which would again draw the readers eye towards them. I then outlined the two images with white boxes as I had done on my contents page. I think this again helps to build up the magazines identity. At the bottom of the page I added the purple banner which has also featured on all of my pages so far. I think this provides the page with a nice base which the text sits upon.
Finishing touches On Photoshop I created the page numbers which will feature at the bottom of the article. I based them on the page number boxes I created for my contents page. Using the same font used on the numbers before I made the page numbers. I then added a line to separate the page number from the rest of the text which is the magazine title. This again creates the magazines identity. I changed the text type and font to make it fit better with the rest of the article. I made it in the same impact font as my questions. I changed the wording of the piece to make it appear as something more typically seen in other magazines. I feel this works much better than what it was before because it looks more aesthetically pleasing. I then added the numbers to the bottom of the page in InDesign. I think these work well. Finally I changed the text font of the article callout and then moved the bottom image upwards to fit on the page better.
Finished article
After teacher feedback For this piece I found that the feedback was mainly positive. Very few changes needed to be made to this page.
Finishing Touches The first thing I changes was the colour of the question text. It was said that the grey it was originally did not stand out enough against the black of the background. I have now changed this to a much lighter grey, almost white but with enough differentiation between the questions and the answers so as not to confuse the readers. The last change I made to this page was to drop the purple banner at the bottom of the page as it no longer features in my colour scheme.
