ADJECTIVES and ADVERBS

Look at the following sentences: Turtle is a slow animal. Turtles walk slowly. She is a careful reader. She reads carefully.

In the first sentence slow is an adjective. It modifies a noun (turtle) In the second sentence slowly is an adverb. It modifies a verb (walk). Adverbs can also modify adjectives and other adverbs. Here are some more examples: This is an easy question. You can answer this question easily. It is an urgent call. You should call her urgently.

How do we form adverbs? Basically we form adverbs by adding –ly to an adjective. dangeorus dangerously quick quickly definite definitely But not all the adverbs are formed in this way

When an adjective ends in –c we form the adverb by adding -ally: When an adjective ends in –y we form the adverb by adding –ily: easy easily lazy lazily When an adjective ends in –c we form the adverb by adding -ally: dramatic dramatically

There are also some irregular adverbs: ADJECTIVE ADVERB good fast hard early late well

Look at the following examples: Ferrari is a fast car. (fast is an adjective ) My brother drives fast. (fast is an adverb) Jimmy is a good tennis player. He plays tennis well.
