First Shots Union soldiers would not leave Fort Sumter, South Carolina Confederate soldiers started shooting at Fort Sumter These shots started the Civil War

First Battle The first Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) was the first major battle The South won the battle Stonewall Jackson was the winning Confederate General

Battle of Vicksburg Battle fought in Vicksburg, Mississippi The North won and got control of the Mississippi River This battle divided the South (because the North controlled the river)
