Click the image to watch a short video about volume. Definition kL cL mL L Volume is the amount of space something takes up, or the amount of space something can contain. (your locker for example) Click the image to watch a short video about volume. * When referring to water Liter Image: http://www.dmturner.org/Teacher/Pictures/liter.gif

metric ruler or meter stick to measure the volume of Tools We use a metric ruler or meter stick to measure the volume of regular shaped solid object using the formula length x width x height. 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ 10cm 8cm 9cm 720 cm3

Tools Cont. We use graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other irregular shaped objects. Top Image: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/resources/online/2006/grade8/science/images/20graphicaa.gif Bottom Image: http://morrisonlabs.com/meniscus.htm

Units kL cL mL L The base unit of volume for liquids and gases in the metric system in the liter and is represented by L or l (L = liter). Metric Units Liter = L Mililiter = mL L= 1000 mL The base unit for the volume of solids is meters cubed or m3 Which is larger? 1 mL = 1 cm3 A. 1 liter or 1500 milliliters B. 200 milliliters or 1.2 liters C. 12 cm3 or 1.2 milliliters* * When referring to water Liter Image: http://www.dmturner.org/Teacher/Pictures/liter.gif

How to Measuring Liquid Volume Just pour and read!!! Pour the liquid in a graduated cylinder. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL Images created at http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframework/downloads/SWF/measuring_cylinder.swf 43 What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

How to Measure Regular Solid Volume Just measure and multiply!!! 10 cm We use a metric ruler or meter stick to measure the volume of regular shaped solid object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ 10cm 10cm 10cm 1000 cm3

How To - Measuring Irregular Solid Volume Just see how much water it pushes out of the way!!! http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/R_S1Science/sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm With water and a graduated cylinder, we can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Volume of H2O with object = ______ (minus) Volume of H2O only = ______ = Objects Volume = ______ 260mL 200mL 60mL Click here for an online activity about volume. Choose Lessons  Volume & Displacement

Now take what you've learned and go practice!
