How Are Students Placed Into Core Classes? MAP Test Grades Teacher Recommendations In English, Social Studies, Science, and Math, the department chairs use a triangulation of data to determine placement of incoming freshmen. The data used by the department chairs includes the MAP test, grades and 8th grade teacher recommendations. However, final placement decisions are reviewed by each of the student’s middle school teachers, in their respectful subject areas. Families are able to request a level change – requests will be dependent on department chair approval. Refer to the email sent by the high school on January 31st for information on level changes and final deadlines for requests. *If you wish to change the level of a recommended core class, please submit a request using the link to the form on the Lake Zurich High School website for department chair approval and submit between Wednesday, January 30 - Thursday, February 14

Typical Freshman Schedule Period 1st Semester 2nd Semester 1 English* 2 Math* 3 Biology* 4 World Studies/AP World History* 5 P.E.* 6 Lunch/FAME 7 Elective 8 9 Study Hall / Elective** Study Hall/ Elective** Each student will be enrolled in four core classes (levels based on recommendations) along with a PE course and a lunch/FAME period. Lake Zurich High School has a 9 period day, which leaves plenty of room in your schedule for elective choices. We highly recommend students take a study hall both semesters their freshman year. * Graduation Requirement **Each student will have a lunch period and is recommended to have 1 study hall period in their schedule.

World Language To give you the most options after high school: take as many World Language classes that you can be successful in. World Language counts toward humanities credit. World Language is not a high school graduation requirement. College requirements for admission and graduation are all different depending on the college. To give you the most options (and potentially waive out of having to take any more language in college) take the most amount of language classes that you can be successful in (C or better).

Important Dates Tuesday, January 22 – Purple Course Selection Sheets are due Wednesday, January 30 – Core course placements are posted on Home Access Wednesday, January 30 – Thursday, February 14 – Waiver period for core course level changes Thursday, February 14 – LAST day to let your counselor know if there are any changes in the electives you requested Monday, March 11 – Course requests (including electives) are posted on Home Access   Please do not forget to pick up an important dates sheet before leaving the auditorium. This sheet will have information relevant to your student’s course registration. The purple Course Selection sheets, with chosen electives, will be collected at the middle schools on Thursday, January 22nd or before! All core (required) course recommendations will be made available on Home Access, and an e-mail will be sent to all parents about the waiver process, on Wed, January 30th. If you would like to change your son/daughter’s placement in English, Social Studies, Science, Math, or World Language there will be instructions in the e-mail sent to you on Wed, January 31st about the waiver process. Please take note of due dates for level change requests. Verification sheets which indicate core course level placements, along with electives that were selected, will be made available by Thursday, March 8th on Home Access. Contact your son/daughter’s counselor if there are any elective course errors by February 15th. Schedules are picked up at the high school in August during the Residency Event (they will not be mailed home).

Role of the Counselor Social Emotional Counseling Academic Counseling Career Counseling We are often asked what does a counselor do?! We do everything we can to help your student be successful in high school by focusing on these three areas: Social-Emotional, Academic and Career Counseling.

Social Emotional Learning Freshmen Achieving Maximum Excellence FAME works to provide support for your transition to high school. Helps freshmen build an understanding for social and emotional skills needed for success as required by the State Board of Education. Allows you to meet new people, learn about our resources, and build key relationships within the building. Takes place during half of lunch periods Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. F.A.M.E is our new freshmen mentoring program lead by our counselors and peer mentors. Its purpose is two-fold. First, it will provide support for our students transitioning from middle school to high school. Second, the program helps the freshmen develop social and emotional skills which will help them succeed in high school and beyond. F.A.M.E will cover a wide variety of topics which impact teenagers daily in the high school environment.

Academic Counseling Assist students in selecting classes that meet their needs for graduation and beyond. Guide students toward academic resources. We help all our students, but especially those who are struggling academically, get connected with resources we have in the building to help them be successful.

College/Career Counseling Introduce as a resource to explore post-secondary options. Help students discover their interests and strengths. Support students in developing and achieving post-secondary goals.

Elective/Athletic/Activity Showcase Electives, Activities, and Athletics are in the Main Gym until 8:00 p.m. Fall sports start before school starts Most sports have a summer camp Department Chairs will be available outside the PAC for questions The more involved you are the better student you become. School means more than just homework and tests. You also get better at time management which will always help you. All clubs and teams are represented and can hopefully answer any questions you have. Get involved in the summer camps to meet people and your coaches. Teachers and department chairs are available for questions tonight about classes.
