Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) We would like to share some information about Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Programs with you this afternoon. Elsa Velez, Ph.D./PBIS Coordinator Keith Grier/Director of Student Services

PBIS is… A School-based Intervention for Reducing Disruptive and Aggressive Behaviors Changes the Climate of the Entire School Teaches Expectations Looks at Data PBIS is a - RESEARCH PROVEN PROGRAM - - IS DESIGNED TO USE DATA -AND PROVIDES A MORE POSITIVE \ SCHOOL CLIMATE

PBIS Is supported by the US Department of Education: Currently implemented in over 2700 schools in 27 states. 250 schools trained in Maryland (2 seconds to look) WE CURRENTLY HAS 15 OF THE 250 SCHOOLS TRAINED IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND

PBIS SCHOOLS IN CHARLES COUNTY Barnhart ES Brown ES Eva Turner ES Indian Head ES JC Parks ES Jenifer ES JP Ryon ES Malcolm ES Mitchell ES TC Martin ES General Smallwood MS John Hanson MS Matthew Henson MS Mattawoman MS Stoddert MS We have some staff members who are here today from PBIS schools. We are so PROUD of this group of people and we want to SHARE this with you. I would like to ACKNOLEWDGE some of our staff: From Jenifer ES: Susie Fowler From John Hanson MS: Jill Locco From Malcolm ES: Sandra Brehon From JC Parks ES: Cassandra Blacktree and Thadine Wright From Eva Turner: Kathleen Morgan From TC Martin: Robert Morrow THEIR SUCCESS IS THE REASON WHY WE ARE HERE.

EXEMPLAR SCHOOLS Jenifer Elementary School Eva Turner Elementary School JC Parks Elementary School John Hanson Elementary School TC Martin Elementary School Malcolm Elementary School OUT OF THE 250 SCHOOLS IN MARYLAND, -52 WERE CHOSEN AS EXEMPLAR SCHOOLS BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING TERRIFIC JOB -THESE 52 SCHOOLS WERE SELECTIVELY JUDGED USING THE DATA AS EXTRAORDINARY PBIS SCHOOLS, 6 OF THESE JUDGED AS EXEMPLARY ARE FROM CHARLES COUNTY

Systems for Students with High-Risk Behavior Individualized Systems for Students with High-Risk Behavior ~80%-90% of Students ~5% ~10 to 15% Systems for Students with At-Risk Behavior PBIS is for ALL Students PBIS PROVIDES A CONTINUUM OF SERVICES WHICH SUPPORTS ALL STUDENTS. 80% OF THE STUDENTS WILL RESPOND TO A UNIVERSAL PROGRAM AND BE VERY SUCCESSFUL WE ALSO LEARNED ABOUT 15% OF THE STUDENTS NEED MORE INTENSIVE SUPPORT IN ORDER TO EXHIBIT MORE POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL CHANGES. AND ABOUT 5% WILL REQUIRE HIGHLY INTENSIVE INTERVENTIONS FOR A PERIOD OF TIME IN ORDER TO CHANGE BEHAVIORS TO MORE ACCEPTABLE ONES.

DATA A MAJOR FOCUS OF PBIS IS LOOKING AT DATA

MARYLAND SCHOOLS AT A GLANCE THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF 2 SCHOOLS IN OTHER COUNTIES IMPLEMENTING PBIS SHADY SPRING REDUCED OFFICE DISCIPLINE REFERRALS (ODRS) BY 55% SINCE IMPLEMENTING PBIS WESTERN HEIGHTS REDUCED OFFICE REFERRALS BY 53% SINCE PBIS WAS IMPLEMENTED

CHARLES COUNTY DATA THIS GRAPH REPRESENTS THE DATA WE HAVE COLLECTED FROM 3 EXEMPLAR SCHOOLS. THEIR REDUCTION IS A COMBINED AVERAGE OF 36% IN ONE YEAR.

JENIFER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEN WE BREAK DOWN THE DATA BY INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS WE HAVE SEEN A 73% REDUCTIONS OF OFFICE REFERRALS AT JENIFER SINCE IMPLEMENTATION OF PBIS IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT AT THE SAME TIME JENIFER’S POPULATION HAS INCREASED BY 22% WHILE OFFICE REFERRALS FOR BEAHVIORS HAVE DECREASED 73%

JC PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL At JC Parks they had a 50% reduction in office referrals in one year. Their goal was 20%. As you can see, they achieve well over their one year goal. JC Parks’s student population also increased by 7 % while office referrals for BEHAVIORS decreased 50%.

JOHN HANSON MIDDLE SCHOOL John Hanson ALSO REDUCED REFERRALS BY 54% . (In addition, John Hanson is showing a similar trend of improvement as Jenifer over time since the implementation of PBIS which results in 33% over two year period. This positive trend is encouraging for the potential to achieve similar results as in Jenifer.) (First year improvement is slower than 2nd and then it gradually improves with time, cumulative, not that every year we are going to see 50%s but cumulative you do)

THESE SCHOOLS REPORT: An Increase in Community and Parent Satisfaction An Increase in Staff Satisfaction A Reduction in Staff Absenteeism A Reduction in Teacher Transfer Requests and Turnover Increased Administrative Time Spent in Classrooms and Assisting With Academics Increased Administrative Time for Staff Support What we are observing with PBIS programs statewide and we are now observing PERSONALLY in Charles County is that parents feel that school is a better place to send their children and staff feel that school is a better place to work in.

PROJECT TARGET Is a 5 Year Collaborative Project With: Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Sheppard Pratt Health Systems Johns Hopkins University We also have a partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education to develop an evaluation procedure of PBIS. These agencies are identifying and evaluating the tools of the why and how of PBIS success.

GOALS: More PBIS Schools in Charles County Regional Training Develop Partnerships With the Community Broaden Community Awareness We would like to train all schools in Charles County. We will need to develop Regional Training because it is getting too large for MSDE and it is getting very expensive. In order to be successful we need to develop connections with the community and receive more support. We are beginning to share our success with some organizations. We just presented to the La Plata Rotary Club about three weeks ago and you may have noticed the Maryland Independent Article FEW WEEKS AGO.

NEEDS: Build PBIS Capacity Financial Support Expand Teams Training Data Collection Financial Support These are some of the needs we are facing as we are expanding faster than we can provide.

Charles County PBIS staff, students, and parents would like to thank the Elected Board of Education for their continued interest and support of our program. We would like to thank you for your time. Are there any questions?
