Why Colonize SC? To gain wealth and power Europeans believed the more wealth a country had, the more powerful it would become England saw Spain as a threat to becoming more powerful because of their presence in America England saw SC as a chance to make money, become richer, and have more power
1st attempt to colonize SC 1629 Led by Sir Robert Heath after being granted the land by King Charles I Was to include all land between northern border of Florida and Albermarle Sound in NC and extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean Never able to put together an expedition to settle the land
Back in England… Civil War King Charles I defeated and executed King’s sons escaped to France and stayed there until Parliament restored their family to the throne-known as the Restoration Restoration had a major impact on colonization of SC
2nd attempt to Colonize SC 1663 King Charles II gave Carolina to 8 of his supporters called the Lords Proprietors Land explored by Capt. William Hilton who traveled from Barbados to explore creeks and rivers around what is now Hilton Head Settled by Barbadians along the Cape Fear River (NC) but failed within 3 years
3rd attempt to colonize SC 1669 Led by Anthony Ashley Cooper, one of the Lords Proprietors Asked each proprietor to contribute money to establish the colony About 100 people including men, women, and children were recruited to go to SC from England Sailed in the Carolina, Port Royal, and Albemarle
Led by Joseph West to Barbados to pick up more people including sir John Yeamans who was supposed to be the governor Two ships were lost due to bad weather 1670-landed near Bull’s Island and welcomed by the Kiawah Indians but decided not to settle there Settled on Albemarle Point near the Ashley River and founded Charles Towne
