John N. Galayda – Director of LCLS Construction March 30, 2009 Project Overview John N. Galayda – Director of LCLS Construction March 30, 2009

90% complete on TEC 1.5 XTOD 87% complete 1.6 XES 46% complete 1.9 CF ANL 99% complete LLNL

Observation of 3rd Harmonic, 1st Undulator At the last possible shift before the 3 week shutdown, Joe Frisch and Rick Iverson got some good data showing the effect on the 3rd harmonic of the undulator radiation of the Yttrium K edge in the YAG screen that Henrik Loos set up with. Analysis has just started but I I have attached some plots that thought you might be interested in. Picture 1 is the overall picture, taken with 100 camera shots added together and the background subtracted. The yellow stripe is the dipole radiation, which actually goes down but in this series of picture is inverted. You can see the aperture due to the vacuum chamber as well as the general shape of the xray radiation from the U25 segment.

21 Undulators Installed Enough to saturate at 1.5 A

X-Ray Transport/Optics/Diagnostics WBS 1.5 is >87% complete LLNL scope >90% complete Mask, Slits, Attenuator, Imager at SLAC K-mono tested at SSRL, in assy at LLNL Mirrors coated X-ray diagnostics online in May X-rays into Near Hall in July LLNL 5 mm collimator Hard x-ray Monochromator (K Spectrometer) Soft X-Ray Offset mirror system Gas Detector Solid Attenuator Direct Imager Pulse Energy Thermal Detector Mirror figures Slit Hard X-Ray Offset mirror system e- Gas Attenuator Gas Detector Start of Experimental Hutches Muon Shield

Gas Attenuator Installation

XR Beam Path to Far Hall: Hardware procurements underway at LLNL Stands for vacuum system Scope transfer from LLNL to SLAC Same design as Beam Transport Hall Bids received, 15% lower price Cabling bid package in preparation

Must get ready for experiment program Issues for the Summer Must get ready for experiment program John Arthur leading this effort Must get XR diagnostics and AMO installed Geoff Pile (ANL) spending the summer with us Must Commission XR systems in near hall Lining up reinforcements for this too.

Commission Front End XR Diagnostics 1 May Get AMO on the floor in July Summer Look-Ahead Re-start linac 1 April Additional testing time for Personnel Protection Re-commission undulator e-beam systems Look for gain at 13.6 GeV Commission Front End XR Diagnostics 1 May Continue installation of Front End (mirrors, etc) Get AMO on the floor in July Commission AMO in August Users in September

PROJECT SAFETY EXPERIENCE Through February 2009 DART Rate Total Project Hours 2.14 M Hours worked DART Rate 1.03 SubContractors 594 K Hours worked DART Rate 3.03 (9 Incidents) TRC Rate 4.04 (3 Incidents) LCLS Collaboration 1,546 K Hours worked DART Rate 0.26 (2 Incidents) Injury rates based on 200 K hours (100 man years) of effort. DOE/SC Goal is a Reportable Case (TRC) rate of < 0.25 and a Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART) rate < 0.65 per 100 FTEs.

From AMO to End of Project Build Far Hall Hutches Get ready for accelerated LUSI activities Execute Space Renovation Detect X-Rays in Far Hall Endgame
