Digestive System The function of the system is to break down food into nutrients and energy for your body’s use. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, liver,

The Mouth Mouth- is the first portion of the alimentary canal that receives food and saliva. It contains the tongue, teeth, jaw, salivary glands, muscles in the cheeks, and gums.

The Esophagus Esophagus- is a muscular tube connecting the throat with the stomach. It is lined by moist pink tissue called mucosa. Just before entering the stomach, it enters the diaphragm.

The Stomach Stomach- Breaks down food into smaller pieces. Absorbs nutrients, and contains acids. There is cells in the wall of the stomach that secrete hydrochloric acid. The stomach muscle contract periodically, churning food to enhance digestion.

Pancreas and Gall Bladder Pancreas- is located in the abdomen. It produces enzymes to break down food releases juices into the blood stream regulates the body glucose or sugar level. Gall bladder- stores and secrets bile, digestive fluid that breaks down fats.

Small Intestine Small Intestine- is the part of the gastrointestinal tract following the stomach by the large intestine. Most of the digestion and absorption of food takes place. It is divided into three parts, the duodenum, jejunum, llenum.

Liver Liver- has two large sections, called the right and left lobes. The pancreas, and intestines work together to digest, absorb, and process food. The main job of the liver is to filter the blood from coming from the digestive tract, before passing through the rest of the body.

Large Intestine Large Intestine-it absorbs water from the remaining indigestible food matter. Then to pass useless waste material from the body. It consist of the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal.

The Digestive System

Diabetes Effect of the System The pancreas doesn’t produce the amount of insulin or creates too much insulin and it doesn’t know how to use it in the body.

Sickle Cell Anemia on the Digestive System Blood clots in the small intestine because the sickle cell blocks the blood in the vessels.

Heart Disease of the Digestive System If blood supply to the heart is not efficient, other parts of the circulatory system will be affected as well. The aorta refers the artery that supplies the vessels with blood pumped from the heart. The portion of the aorta which extends down the diaphragm is referred to as the abdominal aorta. The abdominal aorta branches out into three other aortas responsible for supplying most of the blood to the digestive system.
