Day 1
Day….. 1 – Converting Numbers 2 – % of a Number 3 – % of a Number 4 – Finding the Whole 5 – Mathematics of a Banker
Vocabulary Decimal- a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. Discount- an amount subtracted from the original price. Fraction - a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Number Line - a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. a ratio that compares a number to 100. Percent - Proportion - an equation that shows two ratios are equivalent. Ratio- a comparison of two or more numbers. Rational Number - any number that can be written as a fraction. Taxes- an amount of money added to a total bill. Tips- an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.
Today’s Standard Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
Converting Numbers Essential Understanding: To convert a fraction to a decimal Simply divide the numerator by the denominator. Your answer will be a decimal. Thus, you will need to add a decimal and zeros to your dividend. Example: To convert a decimal to a percent Multiply the decimal by 100. Using your knowledge of the powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two place to the right. To convert a percent to a decimal Divide the percent by 100. Using your knowledge of powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two places to the left. To convert a decimal to a fraction You simply write it like you read it.
Percentages less than and greater than Essential Understandings: Occasionally, you will have percentages that are less than 1% or greater than 100% Percentages less than 1% represent a very small fraction Example: Percentages greater than 100% represent a mixed number. Meaning you have more than 1 whole piece or set.

Finding the Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: You can use multiplication to find the percent of a number. This can be done by changing the percent to a decimal or a fraction, as they both represent the same ratio of part to whole. Caution: you can not multiply or divide by a percentage, as it represents a part of a whole that has been scaled up. You must scale it back down first, for an accurate calculation. To find the percent of a number using decimals Example: To find the percent of a number using fractions.

Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: You can calculate the percent of a number using proportional reasoning. As, a percent is a ratio compared to 100. Think converting numbers from percent to decimal to fraction. Example: You can use this knowledge to create equivalent proportions. You can calculate the part in two ways Scaling- Example Cross Product/ One step Equations-

Finding the Whole Essential Understandings: To find the whole is an percentage equation, you will need to begin by identifying the part and the percentage. Example: Next, think “% of the whole = the part”. Use this verbal equation to substitute the identified part and percent. Finally, solve the one step equation by using the inverse operation (work backwards). Examples: In other words: Simply, divide the part the percentage.
