Aims To explain what compassion is and why it is important to be compassionate.

What Does Compassion Mean? Oxford Dictionary defines compassion as ‘Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.’ Self-compassion is helping yourself. Feeling compassionate for another person’s pain.

How Can We Show Compassion? To be compassionate we must: be sensitive to other people’s feelings, emotions and suffering; feel for other people; want to prevent other people from suffering; want to end another person’s suffering; be helpful to others; show warmth to others; care for others; be kind and fair.

What Happens When We Are Not? When we don't act compassionately, we: might not care for other people; might be acting selfishly; not notice other people’s feelings, emotions and suffering; might even cause other people’s suffering; are unhelpful; are cold towards others; are unkind and unfair.
