Developing “Placed Based” Leaders Maggie Woods and Liz Saunders

We hope that by attending this interactive workshop you will develop an understanding of a model for placed based leadership development and be able to take away some key messages and practical approaches.

What are you curious about?

Think about your place ( as a citizen not a professional) What’s important to you? What matters to you? What services do you use? What does it feel like to be a citizen in that place? Delegates to draw this on flip charts

So what does this demand of leaders?

Now think about a place based leadership programme Using the template provided Think through different elements of programme design, and what would make a difference for a place based programme as opposed to a more traditional leadership development programme.

Key Messages from 2020 and Greater Manchester

What is 2020? People developing and leading changes across health and social care to help redesign and lead changes for a better future for our local population. “Developing the Person, to improve the place for the benefit of the whole Population”

What is different? Placed based – Frimley ICS / Hampshire STP Cross sector Flexible and organic Innovative Freedom to act Clinical and managerial participants Non hierarchical

The 2020 Principles 1. Partnership working – We need to role model the type of collaboration and partnership working at a programme level that we are asking of participants 2. Courage to innovate – To get a different result we need a different approach to this programme 3. Community voice – We need to involve the local community as a partner for change throughout the programme 4. Compelling story for change – As humans we respond to stories. We need a compelling narrative that underpins the case for change 5. Adaptive leadership – Whilst we need to offer enough structure and guidance to create confidence in 2020, we also require the freedom to respond to what emerges over the programme 6. Values-based approach – When we reach decisions or conflict points, resolving them with a values-based approach will help us to navigate the challenges we encounter 7. Alignment with frameworks – Reinforcing the right messages by aligning with system change initiatives, for example the Developing People, Improving Care framework 8. A bias for action – Whilst theory and inspiration are vital ingredients for 2020, we ultimately need to move people to action in order to deliver lasting change

Place based OD: the place to be? Top ten learning points from Greater Manchester 1. Collective expectations shape better plans 2. Citizens should understand the plan 3. Go with the flow 4. It’s ok if it doesn’t all work first time 5. Mindsets matter 6. There can never be too many voices 7. Social leadership rules ok 8. Work in humility 9. We are a work in progress 10. Remain curious at all costs

Thank you Maggie and Liz
