Shakespeare Terms. ASIDE A short comment by an actor that is meant for the audience to hear, but is not heard by the other characters on the stage.

Play Devices Hickman, English I

Devices Example: “Shall I Hear More or Shall I speak at this?” Romeo, Act II, Scene 2 Aside - a remark by a character that is intended to be heard by the audience but unheard by other characters (usually short and spoken directly to audience)

Monologue - a speech delivered by one person, or a long one-sided conversation. The Greek root word monologos translates to “speaking alone” Next Slide

Allusion - an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. Example - Reference to balcony and Romeo in Taylor Swift song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xg3vE8Ie_E Next Slide

Example: What did the Prologue tell us about the plot? Dramatic irony - occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not. Because of this, the words of the characters take on a different meaning. This can create intense suspense or humor. Example: What did the Prologue tell us about the plot?

Pun - the humorous use of a word to emphasize its different meanings, or the use of words that sound alike but different in meaning (She had a photographic memory but never developed it.) ROMEO I dreamt a dream tonight. MERCUTIO      And so did I. Well, what was yours? That dreamers often lie. In bed asleep while they do dream things true

Devices Foil: a foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character.
