Problems From Equations

Independent Practice Translate the following statements into equations. The product of six and a number, plus seven, is twenty-five. Four less than a number is eleven. The product of a number increased by three and eight is forty. Three less than a number, divided by five, is two.

Independent Practice Problem 1 Solution The product of six and a number, plus seven, is twenty-five. The product of six and a number… 6x …plus seven… +7 …is… = … twenty-five. 25   6x + 7 = 25

Independent Practice Problem 2 Solution Four less than a number is eleven. Four less than a number… x – 4 …is… = …eleven. 11  x – 4 = 11

Independent Practice Problem 3 Solution 3) The product of a number increased by three and eight is forty.   …a number increased by 3… (x + 3) The product of a number increased by three and eight … 8(x + 3) …is… = …forty. 40  8(x + 3) = 40

Independent Practice Problem 4 Solution Three less than a number, divided by five, is two. Three less than a number… x – 3 …divided by five … ÷ 5 …is… = …two. 2 (x – 3) ÷ 5 = 2 or

More Independent Practice Translate the following equations into word problems. 3x + 4 = 13 5x – 4 = 11 4 + x = 9 8) 5(x – 4) = 10

Independent Practice Problem 5 Solution 5) 3x + 4 = 13 There are several possibilities, depending on the words you choose for each part of the statement. Three times a number, increased by four, is thirteen. Four more than the product of three and a number is thirteen. What number tripled, plus four, is thirteen?

Independent Practice Problem 6 Solution 6) 5x – 4 = 11 There are several possibilities, depending on the words you choose for each part of the statement. Five times a number, decreased by four, is eleven. Four less than the product of five and a number is eleven. Four less than five times what number is eleven?

Independent Practice Problem 7 Solution 7) 4 + x = 9 There are several possibilities, depending on the words you choose for each part of the statement. The sum of four and a number is nine. A number added to four is nine. What number increased by four is nine?

Independent Practice Problem 8 Solution 8) 5(x – 4) = 10 There are several possibilities, depending on the words you choose for each part of the statement. The product of four less than a number and five, is ten. A number minus four, multiplied by five, is ten. Four less than what number, times five, is ten?
