Fossil Fuels Democratic Ideals Communication The Modern Revolution Fossil Fuels Democratic Ideals Communication

For starters, in this era human population was increasing faster than ever before!

BUT…the population growth was not equal everywhere!

World Population of People of European Descent in Europe, the United States, and Canada combined. Year Pop. in Millions % of World Pop. 1750 141 19.3 1850 292 25.0 1900 482 30.0

Not only was the human population growing…it was moving.

Major Global Migrations Europeans overseas 1820-1930 55-60,000,000 Africans to the Americas (Slave Trade) 1811-1870 1,900,000 Asians overseas 1850-1920 2,500,000

And humans dealt with this need by using fossil fuels. But a growing population meant that human need for resources—for energy—was growing, too. And humans dealt with this need by using fossil fuels.

The Fossil Fuel Revolution The biological old regime ends when vast new sources of energy come into use: Coal Electricity Gas Petroleum Nuclear

In Britain coal mines were close to factories and cities. In China coal mines were far from factories and cities.

The Industrial Revolution Fossil fuel energy in production and transportation

Capitalism and Communism develop in this time period. New economic ideas Capitalism and Communism develop in this time period.

Governments had to….. Governments became more involved in people’s lives AND people became more involved in the government. If they couldn’t…

REVOLUTION! USA-1776 France-1789 Haiti-1791

Ideas were moving and spreading fast (communication) Newspapers Railroads Cables Steamboats

The countries who modernized and industrialized first were at a great advantage! (Europe and North America)

Many industrialized countries used their technological advantages to conquer weaker countries (imperialism).

Africa and South East Asia were carved up by European powers like a Thanksgiving turkey. The Europeans wanted more resources for their factories and new markets to sell their items in, so they conquered countries.

Every country wanted to prove they were better than every other country. That is one reason why they built up huge empires!
