Figure 1 The Multifaceted Functions of GA in Controlling Plant Growth and Crop Yield. Gibberellin action controlling several processes in plant development can be either direct or indirect. Under elevated levels of GA, DELLA is degraded, and thus DELLA-GAF1 complex formation is inhibited. This culminates in reduction of the biosynthesis of GA and promotion of growth via (1) and (2). Similarly, GAs promote seed germination either through DELLA degradation or directly (3). Root growth is directly promoted by GAs or indirectly via HDT, which inhibits GA2ox2 expression and consequently increases GAs levels (4). GAs can also mediate the propagation decision and increase plant yield, particularly in strawberry and potato (5), given that high GAs levels allow axillary buds to differentiate in productive branches (fruits production) or stolon/runner (special branch that is propagative in strawberry and productive in potato). Green arrows show processes upregulation, whereas bar-ended red lines show process inhibition.
