Quotation marks are another type of punctuation Quotation marks are another type of punctuation. They are used in many ways.

Zack said, “I will play my tuba in the gymnasium.” Use quotation marks before and after a speaker’s exact words. Zack said, “I will play my tuba in the gymnasium.”

Sue just read the story “The Kite in Flight.” Use quotation marks for titles of stories, songs, and poems. Sue just read the story “The Kite in Flight.”

Have you read Charlotte’s Web? Underlining is a way to identify titles of books, plays, and magazines. Have you read Charlotte’s Web?

Writing Connection: Quotation marks and underlining provide special information to readers. Quotation marks signal when someone is speaking. Underlining signals some type of published writing.

Examples: Corduroy said, “I wish someone would buy me.” The title of the book is Corduroy’s New Coat. My favorite chapter is called “At the Store.”
