The Mole. What is a mole? A conversion factor we use in chemistry to make it easier to talk about a very large amount of particles of elements or compounds.

Ch. 10 The MOLE

Named after Amedeo Avagadro. So is also called Avagadro’s number The Mole A numerical Value: 6.02 x 1023 representative particles. 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Named after Amedeo Avagadro. So is also called Avagadro’s number What is a representative particle? Anything really, but mostly atoms or molecules (mc).

The Mole How big is a mole? Ok, so let’s say I (being generous [haha]) decide to give you 1 mole of pennies. But, the condition is, you need to share your mole of pennies with everyone in the whole world (about 7 billion people). Then you must spend, $1 million dollars/day. So, how long will it take you to spend your portion of the mole of pennies? (What are some of the possible problems with this scenario?)

Answer: 6.02 x 1023 pennies= 8.6 x 1013 pennies/ person 7,000,000,000 persons 8.6 x 1013 pennies x 1dollar x 1 day x 1 year person 100pennies 1,000,000dollars 365 day = approx. 2356 years/person

Other comparisons of a MOLE one mole of peas is enough to cover Earth and 250 more planets the same size as Earth one metre deep in green peas a stack of one mole of pennies is tall enough to reach Proxima Centauri (the second closest star to Earth) and back again 7448 times a mole of marbles spread over the Earth would cover it to a depth of 80 km

Measurements Generally, you measure something 3 different ways: By count By mass By volume

So why such a big number? How much is a mole of: Zinc? Copper? Water? What does that tell you about the size of an atom/mc?

Mole Conversions The mole allows us to convert between these 3 measurements 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles (mc, atoms, ions) 1 mole = 22.4 L (this is for a gas at STP) (STP is standard temp and pressure) 1 mole = MM g (MM is Molar Mass; g is grams)
