Road to the Constitution Colonial influences Hey, King: Get off our Backs! Wanted: a just right government

Colonial Influences Rule of Law Self-Government the idea that all people must follow the laws, and that the laws are enforced fairly. popular or representative system where the people create and run their own government.

Colonial Influences Due Process Limited Government People have the right to fair and reasonable laws. Officials have to follow rules when enforcing the laws and treat all people in the same way. The power of government is limited by the Constitution, and each branch is limited in what it can do.

Colonial Influeneces Rights Magna Carta A set of things that people believe they should be free to do without restrictions. A document created in 1215 by English nobility that limited the power of the king and protected certain rights for the nobles.

Colonial Influences Mayflower Compact Created by Pilgrims after they had been blown off course and they ended up in what is now Massachusetts, an independent territory. The Pilgrims agreed to create a new government and to follow its rules. In exchange, they would all protect each other.

Colonial Influences English Bill of Rights This document, created in 1689, expanded the rights of the Parliament and the people, while limiting the powers of the king even more. This document was well-known because it affected people living in Britain and the new British colonies in America.

Colonial Influences Cato’s Letters A series of newspaper editorials written in 1720 in Britain by authors using fake names. Cato’s Letters discussed many different ideas, such as freedom of expression, which became very influential in the colonies.

Colonial Influences Common Sense Written in 1776 by Thomas Paine. In the pamphlet, he explained the arguments for independence in a way that was easy for everyday colonists to understand. He encouraged them to support the fight for independence from Britain.

HEY KING: GET OFF OUR BACKS! charter Parliament compact permission to establish or set up a colony Representatives who made laws and stood up for the rights of the English people. Parliament is similar to our Congress. Agreement to form a majority-rule government where all the men would vote on whatever issues came up

HEY KING: GET OFF OUR BACKS! Stamp Act Declaratory Act forced colonists to put expensive stamps on all legal documents, as well as newspapers, calendars, and almanacs. the colonies were dependent on the king and declaring that all laws passed in the colonies had no effect.

HEY KING: GET OFF OUR BACKS! Townshend Revenue Act the king placed a tax on things that he knew the colonist could not make for themselves: paint, glass, paper, lead, and tea. It also allowed for British Government to search homes and seize items that the homeowner had not paid taxes for.

HEY KING: GET OFF OUR BACKS! Quartering Acts of 1765 & 1774 Intolerable Acts Declaration of Independence allowed British troops to live in colonist’s houses and not pay rent. Series of laws that cracked down on rebellious acts in Massachusetts Announced the United States was free from Great Britian
