Ability Awareness Week ADHD

The Biology The ADHD minds is made up differently. It is not “defective”. The basic issue with ADHD centres on low levels of neurotransmitters in the area of the brain that controls attention and impulsivity. Sections of the brain are structured in a slightly different way. The frontal lobe effects the ability to pay attention or avoid being too impulsive.

Characteristics People with ADHD may be impulsive, move a lot, be disorganised etc, they are however very creative and many people with ADHD go on to become great entertainers – Will Smith, Jim Carey, Robin Williams. Many go on to be millionaires because they have the ability to hyper focus on what interests them.

Strategies It is not however ok for people to distract others or always be late etc, so people with ADHD have to work on strategies. Sport is an excellent strategy, it literally changes the chemicals in the brain that help you to focus. ICT – using calendars, alarms, check lists etc. Support groups – having someone to talk to and advise. Finding what you are good at and hyper focus.

Video clips The next clip needs to be started from 3mins 40 seconds on. 5th years can watch until the end. 1st and 2nd only need to watch up until the 12th min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU6o2_UFSEY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbq2Ujb3J1U
