STAAR Test Strategies Created by Patrick Haney

STAAR Test Strategies STUDY for 20 minutes every night. Make sure that you are studying every night. Do NOT take a night off! 15 minutes is not that long, set an alarm, do it and you’ll PASS.

If an answer seems obvious, PICK IT! STAAR Test Strategies If an answer seems obvious, PICK IT! You have studied hard, and you are smart enough to remember what you’ve learned. If an answer seems obvious it is because you know it! Be happy that you are smart, gain confidence from the question and move on. Do NOT miss a question because you think the answer was TOO obvious to pick!

NEVER answer the questions based on what you DON’T KNOW! STAAR Test Strategies NEVER answer the questions based on what you DON’T KNOW! If you do not understand what a word means, IGNORE IT. Look for words in the questions and answer choices that you DO UNDERSTAND. These are the words you should think about and use to answer the question. NEVER select an answer because you don’t know what it means. If you have never heard it before, it is almost certainly the WRONG answer!

STAAR Test Strategies Do NOT look for patterns in the bubbles! If you see several A’s, B’s, C’s or D’s in a row, ignore it. Do NOT go back and change answers because of this. Answer each question individually and trust your answers!

STAAR Test Strategies Do NOT pick an answer because if FEELS right! Never read through the answer choices to see if one FEELS correct. The WRONG answers are written to sound correct! They are there to TRICK YOU! Concentrate on the question and NOT the answer choices. Try to answer the question in YOUR OWN MIND.

STAAR Test Strategies DO NOT EVER GIVE UP! Sometimes the last problem is the easiest. You have plenty of time, do NOT give up and start bubbling nonsense. Take a break, go to the bathroom and splash water on your face, but do NOT give up.

Test Taking Strategies 1. Cover up the answer choices.  2. Read the Question. Highlight important facts or key words. 3. Brainstorm! 4. Predict the answer.  5. Select the correct answer!
