Choosing a Just Right Book Because if you don’t read, how will you know what to read?

Things to Consider Length Topic/genre Vocabulary If you can read smoothly How long it takes to read a page How much it makes you think If you like the writing still If you find the ideas interesting

Like Riding a Bike Not going to do serious mountain biking when you first start Not going to get anything about only riding downhill Need to practice to increase stamina, speed, and abilities

Too Easy You can skim paragraphs/pages and still understand You don’t need to think to understand You know all of the vocabulary You can read a page quickly More than 1 page per minute You can skim paragraphs/pages and still understand You are already familiar with the content It seems really easy

Too Hard You have to think hard to understand You don’t know 5+ words on a page You read very slowly More than 2 – 3 minutes per page You have to re-read paragraphs/pages to understand The ideas confuse you It feels too hard

Just Right The book makes you think a little You know most of the words on a page Some might be new, but only 1 – 3 per page You can read 1 – 2 pages in a minute You can get through a page without re-reading You can’t/don’t want to skim paragraphs/pages The books provides you with some new content/ideas You feel confident in your pace and understanding
