Opposing Counter- Views Arguments There WILL BE those who do not agree with your opinion They WILL HAVE evidence that can weaken your argument You MUST RECOGNIZE their evidence You MUST WORK to weaken their opposing evidence

What is an opposing viewpoint? What is a counter-argument? Opposing Viewpoint - Objections to the writer’s claim/your claim. Evidence that can weaken your claim Counter-argument - Weakens the opposing viewpoint. Evidence used to explain why the opposing viewpoint should not considered.

My Claim (the writer’s opinion) Thieves should be given lighter sentences since this type crime doesn’t involve physical harm Opposing Viewpoint (someone who doesn’t agree with the writer’s claim) Many argue that thieves should be given longer prison sentences because it would cut down on crime.
