COMMUNICATION FOCUS: How is practicing effective communication an important living skill?

What is communication? Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages. It is a two-way process. Poor communication is a major factor in marriage and family problems.

Two Main Types of Communication Verbal communication makes up 30-35% of the total message. Non-verbal communication makes up 65-70% of the total message.

Communication & First Impressions Your communication is what a person uses to create an image or picture of the type of person you appear to be. This initial contact creates a first impression.

First Impressions First impression: a judgment of what you are like First impressions are difficult to change!

Effective Verbal Communication Includes: Using the right words (you speak an average of 125 words per minute) Using the correct tone of voice Using “I” statements to clearly express your own feelings and experiences Avoid speaking for others Be clear and direct Don’t put others down Never gossip-it can ruin a person’s reputation and self concept Ask open-ended questions Avoid leading questions in conversations Avoid the words never and always when communicating

Why use “I” messages? “I” messages usually begin with I think… or I feel… and then include YOUR feelings in a non-threatening way. “You” messages attack another person, place blame on another, and are ineffective in expressing your OWN personal state of being.

How good are you at making “I” statements? With a partner… How good are you at making “I” statements? An “I” statement starts with “I feel…,” I want…,” “I’m upset because…” Change the “You” statements on the worksheet into “I” statements.

5 Levels of Communication 1. “How’s the weather” conversation 2. Reporting the facts 3. Ideas and judgments 4. Expressing feelings and emotions 5. Peak emotional experiences

Are you a good listener?? Listening-the receiving part of communication. You are capable of listening at a rate of 400 words per minute. If you are a poor listener, you are a poor communicator!

Effective listening is one of the HARDEST skills to LEARN in life. Hearing vs. Listening Hearing = aware of words being said Listening = Understand the message and idea. Effective listening is one of the HARDEST skills to LEARN in life.

Poor listening = miscommunication Poor listening often results in misunderstandings These misunderstandings are often how rumors and gossip spread.

Effective Listening Guidelines: Take time to listen Believe the person has something worthwhile to say Concentrate and keep an open mind Listen for meaning, not just facts & details Avoid making quick judgments Show interest in the person Avoid distractions Avoid criticizing and giving advice Listen even if you disagree (you’ll get your turn) Be empathetic and understand their point of view Paraphrase the message Do not interrupt

5 Forms of Non-verbal Communication
