Do Now By the end of this PowerPoint you will need to answer the following questions: Describe what Machiavelli would consider to be the perfect leader. What kind of leader would they be? How would they make decisions? Should a leader make decisions based on what the people want, or based on what they think is right? Why!!!!

Machiavelli Machiavelli (1469 - 1527) Italian diplomat, political philosopher, and musician Politics as "The art of attaining and maintaining power." Known as the “father of political science” Wrote The Prince - a political guidebook of advice to political leaders on politics

Political Science studying the theory and practice of politics description and analysis of political systems and political behavior

Machiavelli’s Prince It is good for a prince to be good, as long as circumstances allow The Prince must sometimes trick people and ignore morality This is for him to maintain his power It is also for the good of the state

Machiavelli’s Prince Above all, the Prince must appear courageous The Prince must always engage in military arts - even in times of peace The Prince must take on ambitious projects that demonstrate his power and glory

Remember... Machiavelli was not “the Prince” He wrote the Prince as an attempt to win the attention and approval of the ruling Medici family. Recent scholars have written works that suggest that Machiavelli himself was not as “evil” as his political philosophy was in the Prince.

Exit Ticket Write this quote in your notes and respond to the following questions: "it is best to be both feared and loved; however, if one cannot be both it is better to be feared than loved." What do you think this statement means? How does this statement relate to Machiavelli’s advice to the Prince on how to get and keep power? Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?
