Male Reproductive Anatomy

Male Reproductive Anatomy Target: I will be able to distinguish between primary & secondary sex characteristics and identify/describe the organs in the male reproductive system.   Puberty: a time in life when one becomes sexually mature. Around ages 10-14 for girls and 12-16 for boys.    Pg. 19

Primary Sex Characteristics: physical characteristics directly involved in reproduction Males: testicles and sperm and Females: Ovum and ovaries Secondary Sex Characteristics: features that appear during puberty Body hair, muscles develop, breasts develop (female), vocal cords thicken (male), and genitals mature

Testosterone: a sex hormone produced by the testes in males (and ovaries in females) which stimulates the development of secondary sex characteristics

Male Reproductive Anatomy: Testes (Testicles): small glands that produce sperm (100 million/day) Hang in a protective sac called the scrotum which keeps the sperm below body temperature.

Bladder Anus Testes Scrotum

Penis: male sex organ At the climax of sexual arousal an ejaculation may occur If physically mature the semen ejaculate will contain sperm: male sex cell Semen: The fluid produced by the seminal vesicle which contains sperm

Bladder Anus Penis Testes Scrotum

Epididymis: coiled tubes located on the top of the testes and temporary storage (1 month) for sperm The sperm travels the entire 20 foot length of the epididymis in 2 weeks; during this time it matures.

Bladder Anus Penis Epididymis Testes Scrotum

Vas deferens: Tubes running from the epididymis that carry sperm to the seminal vesicles and prostate gland

Bladder Anus Penis Vas Deferens Epididymis Testes Scrotum

Seminal Vesicles: glands that provide a fluid which contains nutrients and mixes with sperm Sperm continues through the ejaculatory duct and mixes with fluid from the prostate gland and the Cowper’s gland Semen or seminal fluid is now completely formed

Bladder Anus Prostate Seminal Vesicle Penis Vas Deferens Epididymis Testes Scrotum

Cowper’s gland: Produces an alkaline mucous known as pre-ejaculate which neutralizes any acidic urine left in the urethra (cleans it); protecting the sperm Urethra is the passageway for both semen and urine

Bladder Anus Prostate Seminal Vesicle Urethra Cowper’s Gland Penis Vas Deferens Epididymis Testes Scrotum

Summary:

A journey through Male Anatomy Imagine that you are a sperm. Creatively write a story which describes the magical journey you will take though the male reproductive anatomy, using all of the anatomy vocabulary words from the diagram (except bladder and anus). *Use good grammar. OR Choose a clock question (from pg. 4)- options #2, #5, or #7- and complete the assignment *Use a minimum of 4 colors Pg. 18
