What is the Scientific Method? A common process that scientists use to perform experiments and investigations.

Step 1: Questioning Scientists develop a question that will guide them to an experiment. For Example: How many paper clips will it take to make the cup of water spill over?

Step 2: Hypothesis An educated guess or prediction of what will happen. For Example: It will take _______ paper clips before the cup of water spills.

Step 3: Procedure The steps a scientists takes to carry out the experiment. Many times multiple trials will be done. For Example: First fill a cup to the edge with water. Next drop paper clips into the cup until the water spills over.

Step 4: Data / Results Use a chart or graph to represent the information you found. For example: Trial # # of Paper Clips Used 1 2 3

Step 5: Conclusion Answer the question, “So, what happened? Was my hypothesis correct? Could I do the experiment differently? For example: There were _______ number of paper clips used in before my cup spilled. This was ______ than I expected. Next time I could…
