Stories of Human Rights ELA Module 1 Unit 1 Lesson 5 Mid-Unit 1 Assessment: Human Rights Vocabulary and Common Prefixes

Do Now Quick Write: What strategies can you use to figure out the meanings of new words? Which strategy works best for you?

Learning Targets I can use strategies to determine the correct meaning of vocabulary words related to human rights. I can use common Greek and Latin affixes (prefixes) and roots as clues to help me know what a word means. I can use human rights vocabulary words correctly in my writing.

Review of Introduction to the UDHR Note-catcher Share with your partner the ideas and words that you wrote down (from the previous lesson). What was this section of the UDHR about?

Visualizing Word Meanings What are human rights? Human rights are the things that the authors of the UDHR believe should be true for all people. Examples: to be free, to be equal, to have enough to eat, to have fun, etc… Think of the word equal. What do you visualize when you hear that word? What could a small group of people do to show the meaning of the word equal?

Visualizing Word Meanings In a small group, you will: Receive a vocabulary word. Have 5 minutes to create a standing scene (no talking or movement within the scene) that shows the meaning of your word. Share your scene with the class. How does visualizing our vocabulary words help us remember the meaning of the word?

Mid-Unit Assessment: Human Rights Vocabulary and Common Prefixes Today you will show me that you have been reaching our learning targets by showing what you know on a vocabulary quiz. Work independently. When finished, check your work then you may read silently.
