Relatively small (3 body paragraph minimum) but high standards for use of evidence and logic. 50 assessment points (same as last test) Due to turnitin.com
Notes: Thesis Every good thesis has three parts: Claim: directly answers the question. Method Statement: states the most important reasons why that answer is correct. Warrant: states the logic of the argument. Why does it concentrate on some parts of the question rather than others? What does it compare?
Example Thesis What was the most important factor in allowing Europeans to conquer the Americas? Claim: Europe’s superior technology Method Statement: this technology was the most important factor in most of the battles between European and American opponents. Warrant: this essay looks at the impact of each factor on particular battles because that allows the assessment of specific examples rather than generalized statements.
Notes: Warrants Most essays, especially in high school, don’t actually write their warrant. Writing down your warrant forces you to maintain a good logical basis for your argument. If your warrant doesn’t make sense, it’s a good chance your argument doesn’t either.
Notes: Making a warrant Creating a warrant is all about exploring the prompt. Think about what the prompt is asking and potential ways you could answer that prompt.
Steps to a Warrant Read the prompt. Ask a warrant question Ask exploration questions Write your warrant.
