« « What’s ALEA ? ALEA A place to understand numbers Learning, Teaching and Dissemination of Statistical Data in Internet «

« www.alea.pt What’s ALEA ? Local Action of Applied Statistics It aims at providing effective tools for the understanding, using and teaching of Statistics. ALEA has been specially designed both for teachers and students of basic and secondary education levels. «

The teaching of statistics “It’s important that the study of statistics contribute to improve the students capacity of evaluating and understanding the meaning of statistical texts. The school must offer to students appropriate tools so that they reject some newspaper titles, advertising pages, and other kind of information in which the data interpretation or sampling haven’t been correctly made.” in Mathematics Program - Portuguese Ministry of Education (10th level)

However, the form of presentation is not adequate for schools How did it start? Presentation of the Statistics Portugal web site in the Tomaz Pelayo Secondary School (ESTP) The importance of the official data available in the Statistics Portugal web site is recognized as being very important … However, the form of presentation is not adequate for schools The partnership between Statistics Portugal and ESTP started ALEA project aims to create a place where both teachers and students can take part in solving day-to-day problems giving rise to reflections of a statistical nature www.alea.pt launched in 1999 «

The number of participants in e-ALEA courses is increasing E-learning courses directed mainly to secondary school teachers are another important component of ALEA. Five courses took place since December 2003 The number of participants in e-ALEA courses is increasing «

ALEA - Challenges Everyday problems made accessible to students in order to develop their fondness for statistics. They are based on News Stories published in newspapers and magazines in two levels of difficulty

“In witch situations do you use ALEA?” Survey carried out Main conclusions “Search for information” is the most referred motive for the use of ALEA “Personal training and learning concepts” is more referred by teachers that do not have math’s qualifications Teachers with math’s background use ALEA more often Teachers whose don’t have math’s qualifications give more importance to the contribution of this resource to the learning and teaching of statistics

ALEA won the 1st Best Cooperative Project Award This prize was created within the framework of the International Statistical Literacy Project - ISLP and was granted for the very first time in 2007. The ISLP aims at promoting statistical literacy worldwide and is led by the International Association for Statistical Education, a Section of the International Statistical Institute – ISI. The prize was handed during the 56th Session of the ISI, which took place from 22 to 29 August, in Lisbon. The award recognised ALEA as an example of cooperation among different organizations, towards the promotion of statistical literacy in Portugal.

...by joining theoretical concepts with real data… Final remarks Our practice shows us the efficiency of alternative resources for teaching and learning statistics such as ALEA to promote statistical literacy… ...by joining theoretical concepts with real data… … and improving critical and “careful” thinking! «
