Parts of a Seed

Outer Seed Parts seed coat hilum (protects seed from damage, disease, insects) (indentation or dent on side of seed)

Three Main Parts of a Seed endosperm/cotyledon (tiny plant) (food supply) (outer protective covering)

Internal Seed Parts seed coat cotyledon/endosperm

Internal Seed Parts Embryo Plumule Epicotyle Hypocotyl Radicle Seed Coat Cotyledon

Seed Vocabulary embryo – tiny plant inside seed cotyledon – food source for embryo, once food supply is used up the plant manufactures its own food through photosynthesis plumule – embryonic leaves epicotyle- upper stem hypocotyle – middle stem radicle – roots germination – process through which the embryo begins to grow; moisture level, light, and temperature are environmental conditions that trigger germination
